International peace-keeping is one of the three missions of the Swiss Armed Forces and as such is laid down in the Swiss Military Act. This mission is carried out by Swiss Armed Forces International Command SWISSINT located in Stans. The implementation of the armed forces’ ‘peace-keeping’ mission comprises; recruitment, logistical support; mission-specific training of personnel; subsequent national command and control during operations and mission evaluation. The Swiss Armed Forces have been involved in peace support missions since 1953. Currently a maximum of 280 men and women from the rank of first private to major general are serving for the cause of peace in 19 countries on four continents. The vast majority are militia personnel.
