Overview: Sweetwater Spectrum, a non-profit organization, was founded with the vision to design and build a residential community for adults with autism. Sweetwater Spectrum is an innovative, community-based, long-term housing option for adults with autism or similar intellectual/developmental disabilities, located in the heart of Sonoma, California, just a few blocks from the historic Sonoma Square. The growing demand for autism-specific support, programs, employment, and housing has reached crisis levels. In the coming decade, as many as 500,000 children with autism will reach adulthood, yet few residential options exist for them. Sweetwater Spectrum is a thought leader in this field and the innovative model has been replicated nationwide to help solve this housing crisis. History: In 2009, a group of families with children with autism collaborated with professionals and civic leaders to found a non-profit organization with a vision: to design and build a residential community for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities unlike anything available today. Since opening its doors in January 2013, Sweetwater has grown, evolved and remains dedicated to providing a model for the nation’s families, who are struggling with the lack of housing options for their adult children. Mission: Sweetwater’s mission is to provide adults with autism, or similar intellectual / developmental disabilities, community-based, long-term housing that offers individual choice and challenges each resident to reach their highest potential and be active contributing members of the community. Sweetwater’s goal is to be a resource for the autism community, providing a model for community-based housing for adults with developmental disabilities.
