Ethereum Swarm is a peer-to-peer network for storing and distributing data — a public alternative to keeping data on a single provider's infrastructure. Data is addressed by its content rather than by location, so anything stored can be verified and retrieved from any node in the network. Storage is paid for at the protocol layer through postage stamps, which compensate node operators for keeping data available. That arrangement does not depend on a contract with a vendor, or on the organisation that uploaded the data continuing to exist. The reference client, Bee, is open source under BSD-3-Clause, and the network has been in production since June 2021. Ethereum Swarm is developed by a Swiss non-profit foundation and an open contributor community.
