About the Organization The Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients Network (“SCTPN”) began as an adult support group in 1989. In September 1993, SCTPN incorporated as a not‐for‐profit charitable organization and later received its 501© (3) tax‐exempt status. Having this status enabled SCTPN to seek additional financial support that assists in reaching more adults and others with sickle cell and thalassemia. SCTPN’s services include referrals to comprehensive care programs and services, public awareness through educational forums and advocacy, scholarships to students living with sickle cell and thalassemia and financial assistance for patients who meet the organization’s established criteria. Mission To advocate for this underserved and underrepresented community; provide referrals, services, and support for individuals and families living with sickle cell, thalassemia (Cooley’s anemia) and other inherited blood disorders. Provide educational programs and materials to the affected population and the general public, with the intention of empowering individuals and families to take control of their health, and increase the understanding of hemoglobin variants. Goals To collaborate with public and government agencies, other community organizations, healthcare providers and educational institutions to improve the understanding of hemoglobin disorders as well as increase the availability of resources. To continue to be a major driving force in the community to bridge the gaps in services for the affected community, empowering and educating patients about their rights and how to better protect it under the law. To provide referrals to resources that help to diminish the negative emotional, psychological, social and economic impact on families affected by sickle cell and thalassemia. SCTPN will continue to serve as advocate for increased funding to establish more comprehensive treatment programs.
