Ecofiltro se inició hace más de 20 años y funcionó como una organización no-lucrativa durante la mayor parte de su historia. Philip Wilson, nuestro director ejecutivo, llegó a la conclusión que el problema del agua, el hecho de que el agua pura falta en los hogares rurales de muchos guatemaltecos, no podía ser solucionado efectivamente con la dependencia de donaciones que existía cuando él inició como director. Él decidió convertir Ecofiltro en una empresa de impacto, un “social business”, que se enfocaría en un acercamiento híbrido al problema en el cual las ventas de los filtros en áreas urbanas servirían para reducir el precio de los filtros para familias en áreas rurales.
