STEINERT MARCHING UNIT PARENTS ASSOCIATION Information

The Steinert Marching Unit Parents Association (SMUPA) promotes the educational and musical goals of the Steinert High School Instrumental Music Program. We provide financial support to the music program, as well as access to parent volunteers for all activities associated with the music program. The initial organization and incorporation of the Steinert Band Parents Association occurred in the 1971-72 school year. At that time, Theodore Fort was the director of bands and Samuel A. Alito was the president of the Association. The stated purpose of the organization was "to promote the legitimate educational and musical goals of the Steinert High School Marching Unit as well as its individual members". The Association has also been relied upon to provide supplemental financial support to the Unit. During the 1976-77 school year Dennis Blose became Director of Bands for the Steinert Marching Unit. The 1976-77 Marching Unit contained 96 musicians, 40 pom poms, 22 color guard, and 8 majorettes. Jane Provost was the first drum major. During the 2004-2005 school year Stephanie Harden (now referred to as Harden-Giunta) and Joe Bongiovi were directors of the unit and there were 101 musicians and 56 drill team members. During the 2007-2008 season Mike Anzuini replaced Joe Bongiovi as Assistant Director of Bands. After 7 years with the unit, Mike Anzuini stepped down and was replaced by John Ketterer. During the 2016-17 season, the unit consisted of 83 members; 59 musicians and 24 color guard. It was decided very early on to view the performers as a "marching unit" comprised of musicians as well as front members rather than the dated concept of a "marching band'" supported by flag twirlers and majorettes. In order to more accurately reflect this philosophy the Steinert Band Parents Association decided to update its name to the Steinert Marching Unit Parents Association, known as SMUPA.
