I learned to speak only when it was absolutely necessary and was methodical, sifting out 'problem words' and running through what I wanted to say several times in my head before saying it aloud. It was exhausting. I learned about the speech therapy profession in high school and knew instantly it was my calling. Becoming a speech-language pathologist allowed me to guide others as they worked through their own communication disorders. More importantly, it opened my eyes to this reality: what others hear when we speak is just the tip of the iceberg, and addressing what’s beneath the surface is vital to the treatment process.
