Staje was founded in 2012 by Jewish communal activists seeking to help American Jewish seniors enjoy a more meaningful retirement-age. As baby boomers reach retirement age, they are transforming the concept of a productive retirement, just as they have transformed every earlier life-cycle stage. For many generations, reaching retirement age meant slowing down and becoming a fairly sedentary ‘bubbie’ or ‘zaidie’ stereotype. Many Jewish seniors would move to a Jewish retirement home and enter a more stagnant period of life. Elderly Jewish Americans would see this time as a well-deserved rest after years of work, with visits with grandchildren, golf, knitting, a book club, and perhaps a bit of travel. The new generation of Jewish baby boomers reaching this stage of life looks forward to a more growth-filled, productive retirement. With G-d’s help, many will live for years, if not decades, in good health and with sharp minds. They may seek less pressure and more flexibility as their children have grown and their careers slow down or conclude. But they possess energy, curiosity and wisdom, and want to live this extraordinary stage of life to the fullest. As religious Jews, they view the reduction in other responsibilities as an opportunity to spend their retirement engaged in the spiritual and personal growth that they have too often been distracted from focusing upon. Volunteering, renewed Torah study, mentoring, mind-broadening travel, and lifelong learning are all popular choices for today’s Jewish baby boomers. Staje hopes to assist Jewish baby boomers to create a productive retirement time, by expanding & deepening your Jewish knowledge, discovering new ideas & thoughts, broadening experiential horizons, nurturing old relationships & creating new ones.
