Christ Church St Laurence is a city church and shares a problem common to most city churches: that of considerable demographic change over the last century and a half. Parishioners are now drawn from the whole of the Sydney area and as far as the Blue Mountains, Canberra and Wollongong. There were obvious obstacles to keeping everyone informed of parish activities, beyond the weekly pew bulletin, and apart from a deep and affectionate commitment to the church itself and the kind of catholic Anglicanism espoused by it, many felt unconnected to their fellow parishioners. While those parishioners within commuting distance had the opportunity to attend the long-standing meditation group, for example, and the social issues discussion group in existence at the time, many were excluded from those activities by distance. The aim of the magazine was modest: that of providing a forum for parishioners to write on issues of interest to them and to keep us all informed about and connected to each other, the Anglican Communion world-wide, and most particularly the mission work of the church. Contributors were largely to be parishioners themselves. It was not to be a theological or academic journal, but the editors were confident that the parish had a large pool of informed, committed and articulate Christians who were more than capable of producing sufficient interesting material for three editions a year. Over the years a format has emerged in which several regular contributors write on specific topics, but there are always contributions from others in the parish on a wide range of subjects, from personal spirituality to the issues engaging the whole Anglican - and the greater Christian - community. It was decided that there would be no reliance on paid advertising, that the magazine should be supported financially by sales, and available from the church bookstall, or mailed to those unable to attend services regularly.
