St Albans School Information

Located in the heart of the city, St Albans School dates from 948AD and is one of the UK's leading independent Senior Schools. Entry for boys is at 11+ and 13+, and entry for boys and girls is at 16+. We're proud of our long history as one of the oldest schools in the world. Our roots go back more than 1000 years to the middle of the 10th century, but we are a dynamic and forward-looking institution preparing our pupils for the world of the future. With just over 900 pupils, our fundamental focus as a School is on the wellbeing of our pupils. We help each pupil flourish intellectually and personally, developing self-knowledge and self-confidence in order to find meaning and purpose in life. We ensure that each pupil is well-known and valued and supported as an individual in our warm, welcoming and inclusive environment. Our pupils gain outstanding examination results. In 2022, 44% of A Levels taken were awarded the top A* grade. At GCSE, more than half of GCSEs taken were awarded the top grade (grade 9), four out of every five received a 9 or an 8 grade, and over nine GCSEs out of every ten was awarded the current equivalent of an A grade or above. Much more important than examination grades are values, personal qualities and life skills. Our approach to teaching and learning aims to develop independent and innovative thinkers. Our pupils move on to the most selective courses at Russell Group and other similar universities. The most popular destinations for our leavers in recent years have been Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds, Loughborough, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford and Cambridge, Southampton, Warwick, UCL and York.
