Spring Garden Township is located in York County in south central Pennsylvania. The Township surrounds York City on three sides with a piece of the city actually separating Spring Garden into two parts. The Township is adjacent to the crossroads of Interstate Route 83 (north-south) and U.S. Route 30 (east - west), major arteries providing quick links to the entire east coast metropolitan area. Spring Garden was part of Hellam Township from 1739 to 1822. In 1822 Spring Garden was split from Hellam and named after the suburban area north of Philadelphia. The area of what is now Springettsbury Township was part of Spring Garden from 1822 to 1891. In the spring of 1891 the courts acted on results of an election poll that decided to separate the western suburban area of Spring Garden from the agricultural interests of Springettsbury to the east. The two oldest remaining structures are 1790 vintage farmhouses on the western and eastern ends of the township. In between are many fine suburban residential neighborhoods. Older established areas of Windsor Park, Mount Rose, Elmwood, Beverly Hills and Grantley feature many well-maintained small family homes on a tree-lined grid pattern street system. Numerous newer residential subdivision such as Hollywood Heights, Leafydale, Hillcroft, Strathcona Hills, Oakridge, Southwynd, Rosenmiller Farms, Oak Hill, Crows Nest and Farquhar Estates are characterized by large single family residences on mature landscaped lots along quiet curving streets. The areas of Grantley Hills, Box Hill, Brockie and Wyndham Hills contain some elegant estates and are the most prestigious neighborhoods in the county. A sound industrial base, convenient shopping areas, the finest public and private schools in York County, two hospitals, numerous medical clinics, two elderly care facilities, two colleges, six churches, excellent recreational facilities, the county's most exclusive country club, well maintained streets, public water and public sewer systems serving virtually all major development areas complete Spring Garden's community highlights.
