SPIN is an energy storage company. Our first product, Revolution, is a 300 pound carbon fiber composite flywheel, spinning 400 times a second, on a magnetic suspension, inside a vacuum. Over the past seven years we have invested $5M to build a working prototype. We believe we will dominate the market on low cost, primarily because of innovations in our suspension and levitation system which reduce rotor cost and increase our useful life. Every flywheel ever made in history has had to be precisely manufactured to high tolerances to guarantee absolute symmetry around the central axis. Then, the installed system had to be perfectly balanced and kept that way over the life of the unit. Often, this meant running the system at less than full capacity to prevent stressing the rotor out of balance. Revolution can use unbalanced rotors which spin, not about a predefined central axis, but about the natural center of mass. This reduces manufacturing cost, eliminates maintenance and extends useful life.
