SOWINS Information

Founded in 1981, SOWINS (South Okanagan Women in Need Society) is a non-profit providing shelter, safety, and support to individuals in the South Okanagan who have experienced or are at risk of violence and abuse. Our mission is clear: to provide safe, accessible, person-centred support and preventative interventions to those at risk, while offering community education to strengthen the collective safety net. We envision a community free from violence and abuse, where every individual can make choices leading to a safe and healthy life. At SOWINS, we work from an intersectional feminist philosophy and support trauma-informed practices and harm reduction models to ensure that our services are inclusive and tailored to the diverse needs of those we serve. We value collaboration, working closely with peer agencies, policy committees, and community organizations to create lasting change. Our team is passionate, dedicated, and committed to providing services that meet the evolving needs of our community. Our Values: Accountability: We maintain the highest standards of ethical practices and demonstrate integrity in our engagement with our clients, our community, and our supporters. Person-Centered Support: Each person’s journey is unique – each person matters. We promote self-determination, choice, and celebrate their resiliency. Excellence: Our services and supports are guided by best practices, are trauma-informed, strengths based, and visionary. We believe in continuous learning. Diversity & Inclusion: We work to ensure our services reflect the diversity of our community’s needs, are equity based, and our staff and volunteers represent where we live and who we serve. Optimism and future focused: Our work is vital – we inspire change, both individually and societally. At SOWINS, we are building a safer community where everyone can heal, thrive, and live free from violence. Join us in making a meaningful impact in the lives of those who need it most.
