Sound Mind & Body, LLC was founded in 2002 by Nancy Hammett, for the purpose of providing the community with a different approach to fitness and wellness. Nancy is one of only 3,000 Nia instructors world-wide, and has studied Nia almost since its inception, twenty years ago. She received her certification from the founders, Debbie and Carlos Rosas in 1999. She adds that expertise to a long list of other recognized movement arts, including classical ballet, modern jazz, tap, ballroom and multi-cultural dance; acrobatics, gymnastics, yoga and karate. As a professional dancer, Nancy appeared on the Chicago stage and throughout Europe with such notable entertainers as Tom Jones and Jimmy Durante. She trained extensively at the studios of renowned jazz dancer and choreographer, Gus Giordano, as well as the New York Academy of Ballet. She was a member of the women's gymnastics team at Southern Illinois University and received her yoga certification at the Kripalu Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. Other certifications include ACE Personal Training and Isshinrhyu Karate. She is also an IDEA member. Nancy also teaches classes at Yale University, New York Sports Club in Stamford, and Southport Racquet Club. And, she is a presenter for the Graduate Institute, Department of Experiential Health and Healing, a Master of Arts Degree Program, under the direction of Bernie Siegel, MD. In addition to her dance experience, Nancy is a former advertising executive and owner of a promotional packaging business, which served clients in the New York metropolitan area for over ten years. Our other Teachers Include:Constanze DaveConstanze is our newest Nia teacher, having earned her White Belt in June, 2007. Originally from Germany, Constanze came to America to teach and perform ballroom dance, and discovered Nia along the way. Constanze brings grace, fluidity, timing and creativity to the movements. As an intuitive spiritual energy healer, she is a certified One Light Healing Touch Practitioner, and offers sessions by appointment.
