South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), founded in 1965 as part of the Federal War on Poverty, has evolved to meet a wider range of challenges that people in our communities face. Our four main areas of programming include: Behavioral Health Services | Comprehensive Housing Services | Employment and Education | Family and Nutrition. SMOC is a multi-service umbrella organization that works in the community to provide opportunities to enhance self-sufficiency. Headquartered in Framingham, Mass, the agency has expanded to meet housing needs of homeless and formerly homeless individuals in the greater Worcester region and became the Greater Worcester Housing Connection. We also are affiliated with the Open Pantry Community Services in Springfield to provide additional housing, food and supportive services throughout Western MA. You may be providing care for an elder relative, friend, or neighbor. It could be as simple as a weekly call, occasional errands or grocery shopping, or a more demanding need for daily visits or round the clock care. For many of us, these challenges are added to a full schedule of family and work obligations. Care-giving may also be a source of stress or concern for you. We want you to know you don’t have to do it alone. We are here to help you find solutions, and get the assistance you need. Elder Services Care Managers and Nurses work with thousands of elders and family members each day to make sure they have the right services, living arrangements, and access to good health care and benefits. We contract with over 70 different care providers to ensure services delivered meet a variety of individual needs. We can help you find information about elder issues, get referrals for needed services and provide alternatives to nursing home care. We can arrange the necessary care plan to help an individual continue to live at home. We also have caregiver support and respite programs for family caregivers. Some of our programs and services have eligibility requirements and the costs of service are shared with consumers. GLSS is a non-profit agency established in 1976 to serve those over 60, adults of all ages with disabilities, and their families in Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, and Swampscott. Many of our programs reach beyond our five-town service area, helping people throughout the North Shore. We deliver over 200,000 “Meals on Wheels” to homes every year and serve an additional 140,000 meals at our 8 community cafés. We employ more than 200 trained staff and have many caring people who donate their time to help. We are a federal Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and also state certified as an Aging Services Access Point (ASAP). We are a founding member of the Aging and Disability Resource Consortium of the Greater North Shore (ADRC). We are part of the Mass Home Care network, a group of 30 non-profits dedicated to serving seniors in every city and town in Massachusetts, as well as the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4A), the umbrella organization for the 655 AAAs in the United States.
