Albert Whitman & Company
When Albert Whitman was founded more than a century ago, our goal was simple: make good books that kids want to read. Today, we continue this tradition, guided by a deeper mission to create stories that also educate and empower children. Together, we can create a safe space for kids to learn about themselves and their communities. We can promote empathy, inclusion, and personal responsibility. We can help children become global citizens, ones who seek to understand themselves and the world around them. When we put the right story in the right hands, we can inspire the next generation to make the future brighter for everyone. Thank you for joining us in this important work.

At Special Needs Book Review we have introduced you to many parenting books written by and for parents of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many of these mom-authors are only at the beginning of their journey of raising a child with autism. Today's guest in our Author Interview Series is Linda A. Jannazzo, author of My Dreams, Challenges and Joys and her daughter with autism is over forty years old. In the KIRKUS review it says about Linda A. Jannazzo's book, "A poignant account by a woman who learns life-affirming lessons from her autistic daughter." Lorna: Welcome to our Author Interview Series. Congratulations on your book described as a short chronology of an ordinary family with extraordinary challenges. In the excerpt of your book in your guest post I read, " Diana was evaluated by many professionals and diagnosed with autism, a disorder about which we had no knowledge, a disorder we had never heard about. Tell us how this was for you over forty years ago. Linda A. Jannazzo: Hi Lorna, thank you for interviewing me about my book. Long before Diana was diagnosed with autism, she was diagnosed as emotionally disturbed, mentally retarded, learning disabled, hyperactive and simply "there is nothing wrong with your daughter. This went on for many years at many different agencies, doctors and psychologists as we went from pillar to post to find an answer to Diana's "problem. I write more detail about all of this in my book. At this point, we heard about autism from our friends Dottie and Bobby whose son was diagnosed with autism at Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) in Smithtown, New York. It was there that Diana was diagnosed with autism, after many psychologists, social workers and experts in the field evaluated her. She was accepted into their program; however, we were told by our friends that DDI was referred to as the "snake pit", in that they accepted children with the worst behaviors. We were destroyed; however, there wasn't any other agency that would accept our child. ...
