smallTalk® is a seed-stage medical device company creating a new category of neurodevelopmental support for preterm infants. Our mission is to strengthen early brain development by delivering parental voice in ways that are clinically informed, safe, and purpose-built for the NICU. Our first product, the NICU Egg, is the only speaker system engineered specifically for NICU use. Nearly 400,000 U.S. infants require NICU care each year, where long separations and the loss of “infant-directed speech”—a key driver of early brain development—can contribute to poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. With fewer than 20% of parents able to visit daily, most infants lack this critical sensory input. The NICU Egg solves this by safely and reliably delivering recorded family voices. It automatically adjusts volume and duration, meets infection-control requirements, and fits seamlessly into clinical workflow. Parents record through our app, staff manage content in a HIPAA-compliant platform, and the system is already gaining adoption in top NICUs nationwide. Our second product, the Active Egg System, supported by a $2.5M NIH grant, brings infant-driven neurodevelopmental therapy to the NICU. Paired with the Paci™ sensor, which measures real-time suck strength, the Egg delivers parental voice contingent on the infant’s actions, creating an active learning experience. Published studies show significant improvements in neural biomarkers tied to later speech, language, and cognitive outcomes. The Active Egg is now completing a multi-site, NIH-funded pivotal trial and will launch after FDA clearance—positioning smallTalk to deliver the first medical device proven to improve brain development in preterm infants.
