Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) is a nonprofit with over 27 years of experience in sustainable farming. SHI has partnered with low-income farming families in rural communities across Central America since 1997. Using organic vegetable gardens, wood-conserving stoves, seed saving, and many other sustainable farming methods, SHI's local field trainers work with individuals and communities to preserve tropical forests and improve livelihoods. During our program, farmers learn how to provide nutritious, healthy food for their families, create and maintain an agribusiness, and reforest their surrounding environment. Our holistic approach to solving the agricultural, ecological and economic problems of Central America is innovative, hands-on and long-term. Our program improves food security, ecosystem restoration, and local economies.
Red Wiggler Community Farm is a sustainable Care Farm where people with and without developmental disabilities come together to work, learn, and grow healthy food.
Our Vision is to create fertile ground to nourish a healthy and inclusive community.
Programs:
1. RWCF provides inclusive employment opportunities, in all parts of farm operations, for 16 adults with developmental disabilities. These employees, known as Growers, gain a professional identity as farmers and find meaning in their ability to give back to their community through the growing and distribution of healthy food. Growers cultivate and harvest crops performing all aspects of farming: planting; harvesting; field & facilitates maintenance; tool usage; greenhouse skills. The program develops and tracks vocational, and social goals for the Growers to work toward independent living.
2. RWCF hosts field trips, farm tours, consultations and workshops for youth and adults with and without developmental disabilities. Through lessons and hands-on activities in and around the fields, Red Wiggler provides tools for and inspires environmental stewardship and healthy eating in each participant.
3. RWCF provides inclusive volunteer opportunities to youth and adults with and without developmental disabilities on the farm. Volunteers gain knowledge and technical skills working side by side with Growers, inspiring environmental stewardship and healthy eating in each participant.
4. RWCF’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program provides vegetables to individuals in the immediate community and social service organizations that serve low-income individuals as well as adults with developmental disabilities. Customers receive weekly shares of certified organic produce, newsletters, and recipes that promote healthy eating and environmental stewardship. Through our programs we are committed to providing 30% of our produce to low-income households.
RWCF is a 501(c)3 non-profit
