Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center Information

The Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center is a residential facility for youth. The Center is owned and operated by the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center Commission for the counties of Augusta, Rockbridge, and Rockingham, and the cities of Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton, and Waynesboro. Youth may be detained from other Virginia jurisdictions on a space-available basis. The Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center, by the Code of Virginia, operates under the supervision of the Director of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the Virginia Department of Education, and by standards prescribed by the Board of Juvenile Justice and Department of Education and shall comply with all applicable laws and regulations. The governing body of the juvenile center, the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center Commission, consists of one representative from each participating jurisdiction. The Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center serves annually 400 youth, both males and females, with an approximate average daily population of 46. Their ages range from 10 – 17. The Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center operates at a level above the minimum standards set for secure juvenile facilities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
