The Ellenville Journal first appeared in 1849 and continued publishing for over 140 years until it went quiet. In 2006, after much deliberation, Alex and Sharon Richman decided to revive the Ellenville Journal as both a news website and newspaper. On November 6, 2008, the paper was rechristened the Shawangunk Journal to better reflect the regional coverage provided, which ranges around the entire Shawangunk Ridge area of Ulster and Orange Counties in New York State.
