Through broad and inclusive partnerships, AGU aims to advance discovery and solution science that accelerate knowledge and create solutions that are ethical, unbiased and respectful of communities and their values. Our programs include serving as a scholarly publisher, convening virtual and in-person events and providing career support. We live our values in everything we do, such as our net zero energy renovated building in Washington, D.C. and our Ethics and Equity Center, which fosters a diverse and inclusive geoscience community to ensure responsible conduct.
AGU was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences for more than 50 years. We were independently incorporated in 1972.
Since its founding in 1917, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists has been a pillar of the world wide scientific community. The original purpose of AAPG, to foster scientific research, to advance the science of geology, to promote technology, and to inspire high professional conduct, still guides the Association today.
AAPG provides publications, conferences, and educational opportunities to geoscientists and disseminates the most current geological information available to the general public.
As the world's premier professional association for explorationists, AAPG is about the science of petroleum geology.
AAPG's membership is made up of about 35,000 professionals in 120 countries in the upstream energy industry who collaborate – and compete – to provide the means for humankind to thrive.
AAPG provides the network of communications that allows the professionals to succeed.
We invite you to see who we are, what we are about – and contact us for membership or the many services we provide.
