We have developed and successfully tested at sea a highly efficient integrated technical solution for wave energy conversion, as well as for two related engineering challenges: seawater desalination and coastal protection against wave-induced erosion.
Essentially, our solution perfectly aligns with SDG 7!
It must be acknowledged that renewable energy has been quite effective in addressing the second part of this challenge. In some locations, solar panels and wind turbines already make a significant contribution to electricity generation. Unfortunately, the first part of the SDG 7 problem cannot be solved within these concepts, as such solutions cannot compete with traditional energy sources without economic incentives.
Beyond the existing challenges of commissioning and maintaining large wind turbines and the lack of space for solar panels, one must also consider the issue of intermittent generation and the associated difficulties of storing and retaining energy. Scientists are well aware of this and continue searching for new alternatives to fossil fuels — and in this search, ocean energy plays a leading role.
Let us focus on its primary and most accessible component: wave energy. According to analysts, wave energy could cover anywhere from 20% of global energy consumption to 100% of the energy needs of certain coastal and island regions. Over the past 50 years, massive test basins and offshore testing sites have been built, various scientific and public organizations established. Thanks to the titanic efforts of engineers and scientists, important related problems have been solved and even some scientific discoveries made — yet the core challenge of efficient wave energy conversion remains unresolved.
Otherwise, why would the U.S. Department of Energy, European platforms such as HORIZON, EUREKA, and other reputable funds and organizations continue to allocate millions of dollars toward solving this problem?
