Senior Advocate was established in Virginia in 2002 by Stephanie Smith. Smith's experience in caring for her grandmother after she developed Alzheimer's disease sparked her interest in issues involving the needs of older adults. Her hands-on experience providing care management for seniors and their families made her aware that these families were often ill-informed about resources available to help them. She also became aware that even the professionals who were providing services to seniors were frequently in need of additional information and options. Senior Advocate is committed to meeting those needs through the following avenues:Senior Advocate Magazines: Our semiannual publication gives you information about a variety of housing options, home care, and many other professional services that cater to seniors. The printed versions of the Senior Advocate Magazine are updated in January and July. They are available through a direct-mail campaign targeting 30,000 Hampton Roads residents, age 65+, and can also be found through our advertisers, our non-profit partners (the Alzheimer's Association and Bay Aging) and in most grocery stores throughout Southeastern Virginia. Senior Advocate Online: Our website features the same information found in the printed versions of the Senior Advocate Magazine and more. Our presence on the Internet gives us the opportunity to update information about providers as we get it and allows us to post additional educational materials that are of interest to seniors, caregivers, and professional service providers. The website also contains a calendar of upcoming events designed to serve the needs of everyone interested in issues of aging. Professionals can use the website as an educational tool and also as a source for information about employment opportunities in the senior healthcare field. Senior Advocate Network Group and Lunch & Learn Programs: These educational events designed for professionals involved in the senior healthcare industry. Participants meet monthly (on both the Southside and the Peninsula) to network with one another and listen to cutting edge speakers discussing current senior issues. Meetings are held at various locations in our service regions to give as many professionals as possible a chance to participate. General CEU's are available at no additional charge. Senior Advocate Events: Senior Advocate is a leader in the event industry for those ages 55+ and we host Expo's, Educational Series, Socials and much more for seniors monthly. We can also custom-create an event for your business, based on your clientele and services. You can view the current list of our events on the Events Page. Senior Advocate strives to provide regional, comprehensive, and targeted information to empower seniors to live healthy, productive lives and to allow professionals to be as knowledgeable as possible about local services and healthcare initiatives.
