The Public Defender’s Office is a private, nonprofit corporation whose financial support comes from the State of South Carolina and Charleston County governments. The Public Defender's Office has a Board of Directors selected by the Charleston County Bar association. The office is led by an Executive Director who has a Director of Litigation and a Director of Administration working with her in the management of the office. This office and its staff of 19 attorneys provide legal representation to low income citizens who are charged with serious crimes. The Public Defender’s Office also represents in Family Court the majority of juvenile defendants who are charged with crimes.
