semi permanent began in Sydney in 2003, when a few hundred people gathered in a warehouse to see what might happen if creative practitioners from different disciplines spent meaningful time together. That conversation grew into more than 60 gatherings across 16 cities, bringing over 300,000 people into exchange with more than 800 practitioners working across design, architecture, technology, film, hospitality, gastronomy, publishing, fashion, music, manufacturing, education, and the arts. Today, semi permanent is rooted in Tokyo. Its work continues through Tokyo Salone, a year-round cultural institution presented by semi permanent and teenage engineering and stewarded in Japan by 「 yes, 」. Through conversations, shared meals, listening sessions, workshops, exhibitions, publications, performances, and experiences across Japan, we create room for ideas, knowledge, and relationships to move between people and generations. Aotearoa remains an independent and connected part of this lineage, in ongoing dialogue with Tokyo and the wider world. We believe culture grows when experience is shared generously. The work is not only what happens onstage or inside a room. It is what continues afterward: friendships, collaborations, mentorship, new questions, and the courage to build without building alone. Passing experience forward.
