Witfilm is het productiebedrijf van producent Iris Lammertsma en regisseur Boudewijn Koole (o.a. Beyond Sleep en Kauwboy). Witfilm heeft twee pijlers. Enerzijds richt Witfilm zich op creatieve, sociaal-maatschappelijke en jeugddocumentaires, met als sterkste kanten conceptontwikkeling en intensieve coaching van filmmakers. Dit leidt tot innovatieve, visueel krachtige films van artistieke aard over onderwerpen die altijd tot nadenken stemmen. Tot de documentaireregisseurs met wie Witfilm werkt, behoren onder andere Oeke Hoogendijk, Coco Schrijber en Frank Scheffer. Anderzijds focust Witfilm op het ontwikkelen en produceren van arthouse films door regisseurs met een sterke eigen signatuur, zoals Boudewijn Koole, Aboozar Amini, Marjoleine Boonstra, Saskia Boddeke en Peter Greenaway. Witfilm (co)produceert zowel nationaal als internationaal. Veel van Witfilms films werden genomineerd voor vooraanstaande prijzen, zoals de Rose d’Or, Tiger Award en IDFA (in diverse competities) en hebben prijzen gewonnen zoals de International Emmy Award, FIPRESCI, Prix Europa, Gouden Kalf en Prix Italia. Tot de gelauwerde en genomineerde producties behoren de lange documentaires Shadow Game, Dance or Die, De Keuze van Mijn Vader, Zaatari Djinn, Transit Havana, Breng de Joden Thuis, Inside The Chinese Closet, Battles en Happily Ever After, de jeugddocumentaire Nieuw en de dansfilm Off Ground. We put you on to good music made by good artists, whether they’re established stars or rising newcomers. We get asked what the name “Pigeons and Planes” means a lot. The idea was to incorporate two things that are complete opposites but also have something in common. In this case that common thing is flight. A pigeon is the perfect symbol for the starving artists who are trying to survive in a world that wasn’t made for them. They’re mostly ignored, mostly unwanted, and there are a lot of them. It’s a tough life, but they survive however they can and when the time comes, they take flight. The planes represent the mainstream artists—finely tuned machines associated with major corporations, a global reach to the masses, and serious money.
