In December 2009 Nathan Westgate launched ‘Secretly Famous’. A website designed to promote the most unique, independently owned places to stay, eat and visit in the UK. The inspiration for the idea came from a personal insight into how much people love these special kind of places (which are usually just off the beaten track) but will only tell their closest friends and family about them! Frequently asked about the criteria for places on his website, Nathan soon began to realise that it’s the inspirational people who run them which makes it a ‘Secretly Famous’ place. You won’t find this kind of special place without an incredibly passionate couple or individual (and very often team) behind it. So the question he began to ask himself was, what makes someone Secretly Famous? The journey that followed opened Nathan’s eyes to the complex and largely misunderstood world of sustainability. Travelling around the Lake District, he discovered that being more sustainable is a natural and instinctive way to live for the people he invites to join his website. And they’re the happiest, most humble people you could wish to meet. He established that ‘Secretly Famous’ was much more than a guide for special places. It’s ‘a way of life’!
