Sebago Sailing is a business that evolved out of a true passion for sailing and the enjoyment we get from watching new "sailors" emerge. The business is young, founded in 2001. All of us have been sailing most if not all of our lives. We've sailed all over: Casco Bay in Maine of course, and many other places on the Coast of Maine as well as Lake Champlian, the British Virgin Islands, Lake Michigan and Florida. We love sailing in the Lakes Region of Maine! You can be out the door and on your vessel in less than 15 minutes so we get a LOT of sailing in. We quickly found out what great wind we have here and how enjoyable the sailing is in the spring, summer and fall. The wind is brisk in the spring and fall and we get much of our great sailing in then. In the summertime, the wind is more predictable. If it is not blowing 10-20, you can always relax and do some swimming and wait for 1pm for the wind to pick up and sail until it settles down around dinner time. The timing is not always exactly like that, but it is about 70% of the time. There are many businesses that rent motor boats and some even rented sunfish but no one back then rented or chartered strictly sailboats. There clearly was a gap here considering how great the sailing is! After running our "sailing business idea" by several club members as well as family and friends, we decided to take the plunge and launch our new sailing venture. Our first year was fantastic! (Thank you to all of our customers - we clearly would not be around year # 2 without you!!) With the small marketing budget we had, it's amazing the amount of customers that sailed with us. We have many people to thank for this. We put one vessel right at the head of Long Lake in Naples, Maine, next to the Songo River Queen II, and business started to pick up. We were then featured in two newspaper articles in the Portland Press Herald and the Bridgton News respectively as well as the local Chamber of Commerce. This certainly increased awareness and interest. We found a great deal of folks very interesting in learning how to sail. We knew that we had to begin teaching people how to sail. That is when we decided to find a reputable organization that actually certifies sailing schools and instructors. The most widely accepted organization is the American Sailing Association or ASA. This past winter, they certified Sebago Sailing as an official ASA Sailing School and Sailing Destination. We are doing our best to pass along the knowledge we have gained to all those interested in sailing. If we can give a few people the gift of sailing, we can call that a successful day. Sailing brings out the best qualities in people: responsibility, initiative, patience, understanding, intensity, clear communication, altruism, discipline and teamwork. We love to be around bright, fun-loving, adventureous people who can think on their feet and are always looking for new and inventive ways to accomplish things. This is probably the biggest reason we launched Sebago Sailing! We hope you can join us someday, you'll enjoy it, that we can guarantee! We are active members of the Lake Region Sailing Club (LRSC) who's membership is now well over 70 members!
