Joseph Phelps Vineyards is committed to crafting world class, estate-grown wines. Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in the Napa Valley, the winery now controls and farms nearly 375 acres of vines on eight estate vineyards in Napa Valley. In 1999, Phelps added 100 acres of vineyard property near the town of Freestone on the Sonoma Coast, where Phelps grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Established in 1882, the revival of the winery begins with the purchase and reunification of the estate by Jim Barrett in 1972. In a few short years, Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world by winning the Judgment of Paris in 1976. At this pivotal event, Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay was selected as the top-ranking wine in a blind tasting of 4 white Burgundies and 6 California Chardonnays. Today, Chateau Montelena is honored on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as a quality icon, consistently producing some of the finest and sought-after wines in California.
