I started @seated.perspectives with a simple goal: I wanted to increase visibility of disabled experiences. Since I launched the account, I have shared my own perspectives as a disabled woman, amplified other voices, put the spotlight on important issues, and built relationships with other badass disabled advocates. Now, the focus is disabled joy and building a community around it. That's the work I do in the Disabled Joy Collective. Here's the both/and I hold at all times: a lot about being disabled genuinely sucks. And, at the same time, disabled life is full of joy worth celebrating. Both are true. No one is obligated to feel joy — and joy isn't the opposite of struggle. They sit at the same table. A few things I believe deeply: > Disabled joy isn't a distraction from activism. It is activism. > Your lived experience is your authority. You never have to prove or justify it. > Representation changes lives. > Community is the answer, always > Accessibility is a right, not a favour. > You get to take up space your way.
