The Black List is a platform for writers to showcase their projects for industry professionals and get evaluations from readers we vet and keep checking. It began as a survey. In 2005, Franklin Leonard asked seventy-five film development executives to name their favorite screenplays that no one had yet produced, and published the answers. The list has run every December since, and it has always been free. Since 2005, more than 500 scripts on the annual Black List have been produced as feature films, grossing over $30 billion at the worldwide box office and winning 60 Academy Awards from 284 nominations — including four Best Picture Oscars since 2007 and 13 of the last 38 Best Screenplay Oscars. Those are the annual list's numbers, not the platform's. In 2012 we built the platform. Writers anywhere in the world, working in English, host their screenplays, pilots, plays and novels, and can pay professional readers to evaluate them. Readers are paid a fixed fee per read, and two-thirds of every evaluation dollar goes to the reader. Development executives, agents, managers, producers, directors, actors, and editors search it, read the work they find, and sometimes they get involved with bringing it to audiences. The Black List is also a submission partner to the Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting.
