We can have this now if indeed we design, construct, and implement our own SCORM compliant LMS database and systems environment, rather than purchase an off-the-shelf product. Our company has found that in doing so, we have much more flexibility and control of our systems, a more robust tracking and reporting mechanism, and can accommodate a very wide range of tools to enhance the learning experience. At the same time we can easily wrap and implement course modules from a variety of content providers, as long as they are SCORM compliant at a minimally acceptable level. If indeed the providers wish to implement more advanced features, we can accommodate those as well. To even get a rudimentary understanding of SCORM as it is today, is a technical challenge for the majority of content providers and learning professionals. It also leaves small and medium-sized organizations out of the SCORM compliant world, in that they don't have the resources to purchase, implement, maintain, and support a compliant LMS. This should not be. Learning should be simple, as should the implementation of standards such as SCORM. Consider a small, medium, and large SCORM definition, and follow that up with a Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced set of standards, and especially documentation.
