Juan Diego Academy's very own Emeralds Dance Team has only been in business for 2 years but the production they have demonstrated is impressive to say the very least. First year Coach Liza De Los Santos has a long track record having danced since she was in high school. Her journey has led her to destinations of all sorts in different locations. Before landing at JDA, De Los Santos served as the Director of Cheerleading at the Oratory Preparatory School for four years, and performed at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (formerly known as UTPA). The Emeralds have been hitting the hardwood at practice with an intense attention to detail that features lengthy routines and friendly environments where they lift each other up and help each other fulfill their goals. "They're here to have fun" said Mrs. De Los Santos, "our girls have a good attitude and always have a great mindset." The captains of the team are seniors Joika Munoz and Nozomi Garcia and they have embraced their role as the leaders of the program. "As a leader, I have to always be at 100% with my abilities which is to lead by example" explained Munoz. Garcia, with the help of her senior leadership team is in charge of developing and choreographing the routines for the girls and definitely try to lead and set the example on a daily basis. As relaxed as they are, the closer the competition gets, the stricter they get. The team's main goal is to win a competition and show what they're about not only to the school and community but also to their competition. If you want to support the dance team, there is an upcoming competition on February 13 at South Padre Island called "The American Dance Team (ADT) Senior South Padre Island Festival". An elated Munoz lit up when describing her emotions about the competition, "I hope we get more experience as a team and we all get inspired as a whole.
