Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. The Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg (France), now covers virtually the entire European continent, with its 46 member countries. Founded on 5 May 1949 by 10 countries, the Council of Europe seeks to develop throughout Europe common and democratic principles based on the European Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals. 12000 students and 2700 staff study and work at the University of Tromsø. Teaching is research-based. UiT´s seven faculties offer, in spite of a dedication to Northern issues, a broad range of study programmes. The academic community in Tromsø is highly international. The University offers more than 20 English taught master´s degree programmes, and all faculties offer English taught courses at both bachelor’s and master’s level. UiT The Arctic University of Norway is a founding member of the University of the Arctic, an international network of 140 study and research institutions of the circumpolar region.
