Sustainable Agricultural Machinery Developments Pty Ltd (SAM) was founded in 1989 by David McGrath and Gary Griffith to research and develop agricultural machinery suitable for sustainable agriculture and to further more efficient growing techniques. Gary Griffith left SAM in 1990 and David Wilson joined. The company first set out to build a power weeder for use in market gardens, with hilled row crops. This then escalated into more innovative concepts for the farming industry as a whole. In 1990 the development of a mechanical weeder system began. SAM with the help of 'Agrowplow' Australian Soil Care Systems PTY. LTD of Wellington, NSW designed and built the first mechanical weeder, which SAM sell, manufacture and licence throughout the rest of the world. SAM continues to design and sell directly to the farmer resulting in the lowest possible prices. This paved the way for the development of a range of machines which form what is now known as the Raised Bed Management (RBM) System.
