Zen Rehearsals opened for business in November 1990 with 4 rehearsal rooms. Zen Studios was soon at the epicentre of Newtown’s thriving music scene. Zen Studios was the breeding ground for many well known indie bands. Zen grew to a 7 room facility in 1992 adding a recording studio the same year. In the early 90s Zen ventured into venue promotion. Zen opened and promoted numerous venues in the 90s including The Vic on Park at Marrickville, The Vulcan Hotel in Ultimo and Feedback on King Street in Newtown. In the mid nineties Zen released two compilation albums featuring local bands recorded at Zen Studios. Zen Records also released albums recorded independently by Frenzal Rhomb and The Impossibles (featuring ARIA award winner Bo Campbell from Front End Loader). In 2010 Zen expanded to a second facility in St Peters. At this point Zen provided 16 rooms over two locations and a recording studio. Zen offered rehearsals, recordings, digital poster printing, CD manufacturing, musical equipment hire, storage facilities, equipment repairs and Zen had been home to Sydney’s School of Rock since 2002 and now started offering individual tuition. In 2015 Zen consolidated operating out of one two story facility in Talbot Street, St Peters with 8 rehearsal rooms, 1 recording studio and a Music Academy featuring 3 tuition rooms. Zen continues to support live music locally by supplying backline equipment and PA equipment for free to many local venues. Zen’s facility in Talbot Street, St Peters provides all the services it always has along with a growing network of music tutors that can music students from ages 2 through to 60.
