Royce Learning Center provides educational support to people of all ages in the Coastal Empire. The mission of Royce Learning Center is to provide comprehensive educational services that will enable children and adults with learning disabilities and literacy needs to reach their maximum potential educationally, emotionally, and socially and to heighten public awareness of the lifelong barriers associated with such disabilities. Royce Learning Center was founded in 1970 by a group of parents and professionals from the Savannah area. It is the oldest diagnostic learning center in Savannah. Mrs. Harriet Royce, a noted educator of the learning disabled, was the first director of the center. Funding was originally provided by the Junior League of Savannah and Forward Savannah. In 1973, the center began receiving funding from United Way. The purpose of the center was to provide testing, tutoring and education to children with learning disabilities. In 1995, Royce Learning Center merged with Chatham Academy, a school created by concerned citizens to address the need for a full day program of instruction to serve children of average intelligence who were unable to function successfully in a regular classroom. This merger, along with the additions of an Adult Learning Program and a fully staffed, professional tutoring center allowed the center to become the only holistic resource for children and adults with learning differences and literacy needs the Savannah community. Presently, the staff at Royce Learning Center includes over 50 specially trained educators who serve over 1,000 children and adults annually.
