Canyons School District is a public school district serving Kindergarten through 12th grade students. It is a 34,000-student district comprised of the municipalities of Cottonwood Heights, Midvale, Sandy, Draper, and Alta in the southeastern part of Salt Lake County, Utah.

The Salt Lake City School District serves the children and community of Utah’s capital city. The boundaries for the district are contiguous with the boundaries of Salt Lake City. Inside the district you will find a great amount of diversity. Some areas of the city feature multi-million dollar homes, while in other areas, over 90% of the children and families live in poverty. The district serves approximately 24,000 students, and over 80 languages are spoken in the halls of Salt Lake City schools. Our Schools There are 36 schools in the district: 27 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 3 high schools and one alternative high school. In May 1999, voters in Salt Lake City overwhelmingly approved issuing $136 million in bonds to help pay for the renovation or reconstruction of elementary and middle schools. Our Students Students in the Salt Lake City School District hail from around the world. Ethnic minorities make up 53% of our students, and the district serves a significant refugee population from Eastern European or African countries. Approximately 60% of our students come from low-income families, and just over 33% of them are learning English as a second language. We celebrate this diversity and believe it adds value as students learn first hand about other cultures.

Rooted in the Science of Reading By leveraging evidence-based research and the science of reading, each student’s reading development is optimized to accelerate learning and provide targeted intervention. Math & Science Learners develop foundational math and science literacy skills through an adaptive learning path infused with authentic texts and engaging songs to develop academic vocabulary and background knowledge, aligned to Common Core and state standards. The math curriculum follows the What Works Clearinghouse Five Evidence-based Recommendations for Teaching Math to Young Children. Positive Cultural Representation The Waterford curriculum uses a “Windows and Mirrors” framework when creating content. Taking careful consideration to ensure learners see themselves positively represented–”mirrored”–in the content, and have a respectful, accurate, inclusive “window” to other cultures, storylines, illustrations, and narration. Built-in Family Engagement Families are encouraged to participate in their child’s learning journey. Personalized learning tips, plus access to hundreds of digital books and resources in English and Spanish, offer families loads of ideas for at-home learning.
