Established in 1961, Ross Park is the oldest operating primaryschool in Alice Springs. Situated in the Old Eastside area of thetown within large and well-established, shady grounds, the schoolspopulation is drawn mainly from the Old and New Eastside areassurrounding the school. Ross Park School accommodates children from Transition to YearSix, in mainly self-contained classrooms. Rona Glynn Pre-School innearby McKay St forms part of the school complex, catering for fourto five year olds. In recent years the school population has settledat about 250. The school fosters a friendly and caring atmosphere, collaborationamong students, staff and parents, and a commitment to individualsuccess. Students are encouraged to wear the school uniform - whichconsists of a red or navy blue shirt and navy blue shorts/skirt.Classes receive a uniform bear at assembly each fortnight as a rewardfor the highest % of students in uniform. Bullying and harassment of students is not tolerated. The schoolhas a clear and fair Behaviour Management Policy that was developedin conjunction with staff, parents and students. Recent initiatives include:The adoption of First Steps in Reading, Writing, Oral Language and Spelling to allow for all students to develop skills in these areas at a rate that suits their individual needs. With the advent of LATIS , a NT Department of Education initiative, computers and Internet access for students have been supplied at a ratio of 1:10. Provision of an Art / Technology teacher means all students have access to person who is highly skilled in this area. Fitness and Sport have a high profile, and the school has a proven record in sporting achievements across the town, winning the Interschool Athletics Carnival in 1998, 1999 and 2001 and being runner-up in 2000. A Learn to Swim program is provided each year for students in Years Transition to 3. Extra programs are provided in Special Education, ESL and Reading Discovery for students with special needs. The YMCA operates an after-school care program from 3.00 pm daily,making use of the school facilities.
