The social business behind the UNESCO prize-winning Green Office Model: www.greenofficemovement.org We advance sustainability at European universities. rootAbility is a social business that drives the sustainability transition of the European higher education sector, by establishing and coaching student-driven and staff-supported sustainability units, teams and projects. We – the team of rootAbility – believe that universities and colleges should actively contribute to the possibility that humans and other life will flourish on earth forever, which requires that their actions are ecologically viable, socially desirable and economically feasible today. We acknowledge that the financial constraints that universities and colleges face make this ambition seem audacious. At the same time we see idle capacities, within the curriculum, research, operations and community that universities and colleges are not using to advance sustainability. As a social business, we design participatory processes and organizational structures so that students, staff and academics see, think and act themselves to create more sustainable institutions of higher education and learn about sustainable development through practical engagement.
