Ronald McDonald House at Stanford (the House) creates a home-away-from-home and supportive community for families of children with life-threatening illnesses receiving specialized treatment at local hospitals. Established in 1979, the House offers families the opportunity to bond and engage through a comprehensive mix of creative, safe, and participatory programming designed to ease everyday burdens and allow them to focus on what matters most – the health and well-being of their children. In 2014, the House launched a multi-phase expansion to increase capacity from 47 to 123 rooms and meet demand for enhanced family care services. In 2016, the House opened a 67-room expansion next door to its existing location and began renovations on its legacy building. Reopened to families in mid 2017, the 56-room legacy building remodel establishes design continuity across the two building campus and enhances the comfortable and functional environment. The House now provides a continuum of care to 123 families each night and has become the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world. The House features a commercial kitchen and dining room, children’s activity room, teen activity room, computer center, family library, and fitness center, in addition to a selection of program offerings that promote a sense of normalcy for parents, patients and siblings. Families unable to stay at the House due to capacity limitations or who live locally and do not require overnight accommodation are welcome to access House programs and services between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM every day through the Day Pass program. Over 90% of the annual operating budget is raised through the generosity of community members, businesses, and foundations. Approximately 6% of annual revenue is derived from McDonald’s sources, including corporate and individual giving, as well as the Bay Area Ronald McDonald House Charities.
