Founded by the German Archaeological Institute in 1902 (with its own statutes), the Commission has the task of carrying out research on prehistory and early history and to promote and publish principally on Old Europe from the earliest periods to the Middle Ages. In the course of this, it works closely with universities, museums and monument organizations and maintains active contacts with corresponding international research institutes. The Ingolstadt branch, set up in 1981, is responsible for research in Manching and in middle Bavaria during the Roman period.
