Welcome to Rock+Pillar Trading Co. We are a young couple from the hilly, little town of Burlington, Vermont with global roots and parents with hilarious accents. I, Alma have travelled the world and spent my adolescent and college years in Vermont. Parvez’s, my partner and co-founder, parents emigrated from India to Vermont to raise their young and growing family. We were exposed to Peru’s rich tapestry of cultures. And constantly encountering artisans with incredible stories of their heritage, told beautifully through their handwork and crafts. We found that their exquisitely crafted, hand-made leather bags and jewelry perfectly captured the richness of their country and quality craftsmanship. As we spent more time in Cusco, we discovered the rich community of artisanal talent who call the ancient Incan capital their home. We were blown away by the meticulous handmade products that were a point of pride and a way of life for these Andean artist. The one statement we heard repeatedly was that local artists simply desired to earn a living by practicing their cultural traditions, we want to help them achieve that goal. We realized our purpose, where we needed to be and what we needed to do. We left our 9-5 jobs and planned our return back to Peru to start Rock+Pillar Trading Co. Our mission is to tell the story of these incredible artisans and their livelihoods. We want to empower artisans by giving them an opportunity to showcase their products through Rock+Pillar and show the world Peruvian wearable art. We believe that a successful business can have a lasting, positive impact for all parties involved. Our goal is to provide demand for artisanal products of Peru and utilize the proceeds to help establish sustainable practices for artisanal communities.
