Robert Coopman, while Vice President Pharmacy with HEB headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, built a chain of pharmacies that would become known as the highest in per unit volume and profitability in the U.S. From 1980 through 1997 the pharmacies grew from three to over 140 units and from less than $1 million to over $350 million in volume. Leading pharmacy designs, technologies, work processes and drug store integration was the foundation for the out-sized growth. While market dominance and productivity was being achieved, competitors included Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, Eckerd, Kroger, Safeway, Target, Costco, Drug Emporium, Albertson's and Tom Thumb. Since retiring from HEB in the fall of 1997, Robert has built an active consulting business domestically and internationally. He has consulted with pharmacy chains, Pharma manufacturers, wholesalers and technology companies. In recent years his consulting practice has taken on a significant international scope with clients in Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, India, Russia, the U. K., Africa and China. The majority of international work has been engaged with entrepreneurs developing pharmacy chains in their respective countries. Robert is also a writer. Each month since January of 1998 he has authored a monthly feature column in Chain Drug Review and has served as a consultant to the publisher, Racher Press, in New York. Writings include domestic and international issues of contemporary interest. Robert is a licensed pharmacist with a degree from the University of Wisconsin.
