Substance use disorder affects millions of Americans, robbing them of years of productivity, destroying their families, and often taking their lives. Drugs of abuse cause neuroadaptive changes in the brain’s reward network that persist for decades and prevent lasting recovery. Recent research has identified gene networks that drive these reward network changes, and demonstrated that interfering in the function of these gene networks can reduce drug seeking behavior in animal models of addiction long term. Rizana is developing treatments based on this research for a variety of substance use disorders.
