The Rio Grande Theatre is one of several galleries along Downtown Main Street that will open its doors from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 1, to participate in the Downtown Art Ramble. "The Art Ramble brings a lot of people Downtown and it shows that something is going on," said David Salcido, manager of the Rio Grande Theatre. "Come down and see what Downtown has to offer." The Rio Grande Theatre has been entertaining Las Crucens and visitors since 1926 with the opening of the silent film, "Mare Nostrum. Southwest architect Otto Thorman created the look of the Rio Grande Theatre in the Italian Renaissance revival style popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The two-story theater was re-opened to the public in 2005, after eight years of fundraising and renovating. Currently, the Rio Grande Theatre is a 422-seat, stateof- the-art performing arts facility, with a 40-foot fly loft, dressing rooms, digital projector, sound and lighting equipment, acoustical panels, refrigerated air, a refurbished lobby and galley spaces. It also houses the offices of the Doña Ana Arts Council.
