REWILD PANGAEA Information

Rewild Pangaea develops post-mining landscapes for nature restoration and local economic growth. We work with communities, scientists, industry and public partners to turn degraded and closing mining land from a long-term liability into a productive natural asset. Our first project, Project Arrakis, is on South Africa’s Diamond Coast, where the Orange River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Across one million hectares of community-owned land, we are working to restore degraded mining areas and help build a new post-extraction economy. Our scientific restoration pilot and Nature Data Infrastructure are already underway, with the first 10,000 hectares targeted for scale in 2027. Our second project, Project Caladan, is in Limpopo, in South Africa’s critical-minerals belt. There, mining, erosion and degraded uplands threaten the water security of De Hoop Dam and thousands of downstream users. We are developing a catchment-scale model that combines mine rehabilitation with the restoration of rivers, grasslands and water systems. Our model starts by asking what comes next. We develop a long-term vision for the land, test restoration methods, build the Nature Data Infrastructure needed to measure ecological and social outcomes, and use that evidence to unlock the public and private finance needed to deliver at landscape scale. A majority of nature-finance revenues generated through our projects is reinvested locally, helping communities build livelihoods that can endure long after extraction ends.
