Since 1997, the Museum of New Art (MONA) has served as Detroit's contemporary art museum. Defining itself as a museum for the 21st Century, MONA marks a distinct, unsubtle shift in emphasis from a simple exhibition space to a more direct connection between artist and audience. It is, in fact, a museum, which draws its life force, not so much from passive exhibits, but by a forced involvement between artist and public. With the fervent awareness that the history of new art is immediate and, thus, has yet to be written, MONA allows artists to present their work without boundaries and its audience the possibility of drawing its own contexts and conclusions.
