READ International was founded on the belief that education is the cornerstone for long-term change. We work in Tanzania, one of the world’s poorest countries, and use a unique, youth-led volunteer model to: transform abandoned classrooms into libraries, creating a pleasant and peaceful learning environment for students; collect surplus and second-hand UK textbooks, sort them, pack them, and send them to secondary schools in Tanzania; empower young people in the UK and Tanzania to be active local and global citizens through volunteerin; raise vital funds through the re-sale of books that aren't suitable for Tanzanian schools Since registering as a charity READ International's work has been recognised in a number of ways. The charity was winner of 'Best New Charity' in the Charity Times Awards 2007, ‘Best International Aid and Development Charity’ in the Charity Awards 2010 and Best Corporate Partnership in the Institute of Fundraising Awards 2010.
