RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) is a charitable non-profit organization that provides financial resources to assist access to justice for Indigenous Nations who are upholding their rights in court. This is done through fundraising and public education campaigns. Every campaign RAVEN takes on is an opportunity to redefine justice through setting legal precedents, to return stewardship to First Peoples by advancing Indigenous rights, and to take action for our shared futures by establishing lasting environmental legacies. Indigenous Peoples in Canada have some of the most powerful environmental rights in the world. But only if they can afford to uphold them in court. RAVEN was formed because we recognized the need to redress an inherent imbalance. To obtain justice in the courts for Indigenous Nations as they aim to protect their rights and lands, Indigenous leaders, advocates, and their legal teams almost always face overwhelming odds when going against the established interests of large corporations. RAVEN believes first and foremost that our legal system should dispense justice based on the best evidence available, regardless of wealth and power imbalances. Together, we’re building a movement that is creating transformative change.
